What Would The USA Be Like If Bill Gates Were President?

  • Monster CanadaFor readers outside of America, you might not have heard that we’re in the middle of a political showdown (circus?) called the Race for the Presidency. As each day goes by, we hear the latest in the mud slinging and name calling that goes on between the political parties and their candidates.

As I was IM-ing with Garry of Garry Conn dot Com this evening, he posed the question, “What would the USA be like if Bill Gates were president?” Interesting concept and one thing I think deserves a little focus as it could also be an entertaining idea.

After all, the choices we have to work with right now, in my opinion, aren’t much to work with. In fact, this November when the presidential election is held, I’ll probably be voting against rather than for someone.

Let’s see, here are some things that come to mind:

    • A PC in every home.
    • Tax refunds would be in the form of Microsoft shares.
    • You’d bet your sweet bippy that technology would be the first thing on his list.
    • He’d make it mandatory to vote online…using Internet Explorer, of course.
    • He’d probably outlaw Apple.

What are some thoughts you have? Would he make a good president? If not, maybe some place else in our government. Be creative!

You know… this is awesome. I seriously have to sit here for a few minutes to think about it. In many ways, I think he would use this to his advantage. I just watched part of a show on Discovery channel a few hours ago and that is kinda what sparked that question to you in IM.

The show was about Internet Explorer… I really wish I had caught the entire show. But in the show they aired him during court and showed how defensive and almost childlike he was when getting questioned.

Is Bill Gates a bad guy? That is another good question. I absolutely loved watching the movie titled, Pirates of Silicon Valley. It’s like one of my personal favorites. Some of the things that took place back in the early days was absolutely crazy.

I’ll give Bill this… he is a work horse, always has been and always will be. He is very controlling and extremely protective. Is there any blame there? I follow the same attributes.

It could be said that he is very generous as well. He donates millions of dollars to charity each year and helps people in need.

Does anyone know what kind of political background he has? Heck… maybe he could make for a good president? Who knows… I do know this, I totally feel where you’re coming from when you said this, “this November when the presidential election is held, I’ll probably be voting against rather than for someone.”

I think I’ve seen that “pirates” show. As I recall it did show some rather crazy things that took place.

I don’t know of any political experience he may have, but then again, maybe having someone without political experience is what we need. :)

I share the same feelings as you when it comes to “our” candidates for this year, buddy. I vote none of the above.

Not so sure Bill Gates would be the answer either, but hey I wouldn’t mind a few Microsoft shares ;)

Good point. He’d definitely upgrade schools so that would at least have common ground among them. Some more than others, but at least no school would be left behind with a basic such as access to the Web.

Of course, it would all be Windows-based. :)

  7. Were talkin’ about a REAL “New World Order.”

The way it would work is if you disagreed with the President or if you did not think his policy worked just exactly right, he would issue a new mandatory patch to your system.

The biggest benefit that I can see is that you could always click on the “START” button in order to Shut Down the Government.

  9. Actually, Bill and Melinda Gates are doing wonderful things all over the world, especially third world countries, where they have made a difference in the lives of thousands of families.
Unfortunately, in the USA, they have focused on EDin08, to the exclusion of other workable solutions. So far, they have lots of T-shirts, lotsa videos and absolutely NO discussion of education among the political candidates (the entire goal and mission statement of their organization).
If a BILLIONAIRE can’t make an impact on education, then I hold out little hope that he could turn this badly divided country around.

P.S. If you did try to contact him to ask him to run for President, you’d get a letter from a flunky saying that he doesn’t accept mail. (Ask me how I know!) Must be lonely being a billionaire.

I had no idea about the delays in his program. That is, indeed, troubling to learn about that.

I would definitely not want Bill Gates as president. I do not want some rich guy representing the masses – that’s already one of the biggest problems. He should be giving away billions to help people, not millions. You do realize that most of WinXP was stolen from an open source BSD. Mature networking stacks are developed, not born mature! However…he might be a great Secretary of the Treasury…haha

You know, that’s really a good point about someone who is as rich as he is not being in touch with the common man. And good one about being the Secretary of the Treasury. Now THAT, my friend, is something I’m sure he’s qualified for. :)

    @Debbie
I like the blue screen comment, but you lost me at the part about pressing the back button and all that. Are you saying you really experienced all those pop-up ads while visiting here? If so, then first let me say that I appreciate your persistence to make the comment. Then I’d have to say it must be something on your computer as I don’t have any pop-ups on this blog. :)

    Hi Mark,

Good to know the problem is on my end. And a very bizarre problem since Pop-up Windows are blocked in my Browser. Yet, somehow pop-up ads appear on your site after the text size was increased and the pop-up ad redirects your post to their ad page.

Will investigate to see if this happens with other WordPress blogs… No problems with three other WordPress blogs after increasing the text size. The mystery deepens…maybe, Bill Gates didn’t like my comment? ;)

  16. Mark,
Just thought I’d let you know that everytime I come to this page, I get a windows Popup to clean a Trojan threat.
Maybe somebody is jerking with your site?
    Just a thought,

Are the comments about pop-ups and trojans here real, or is this just humor? I am not experiencing any pop-ups or any of the other things described. I am guessing that these are just jokes to go along with the humor regarding Bill Gates.

So many people moan about Microsoft yet carry on using Microsoft products.

So many people moan about their government but continue to live within the society owned by such a government. The alternative, move to another country!

Bill Gates would probably run the country much like any otyer president in that respect. The alternative, move to another software supplier!

I’d like to think Charity would be high on his list and maybe free computers for all children.

They’re no joke. Ryan emailed me today informing me of the same thing. Apparently, it only occurs in IE. Sure enough, I tried viewing MAMD in IE and got the pop-up blocker. I think I’ve corrected it though. I removed the Rank Widget that showed my Alexa ranking. So far, so good.

If anyone else has a moment to see if it happens anymore, I’d very much appreciate the feedback. :)

Hehe…so true about moaning and being owned. Guess we’ve gone too soft on being comfortable with the status quo. Honestly, I wasn’t promoting Bill as president. It was more of a discussion point. Like Bobby said, I think he’d make a better treasurer. :)

    Mark,

I’m not a Microsoft fan, but there’s no doubt that Bill Gates is a capable person. There are a lot of people who are anti-Microsoft, but the company is still going well, despite lots of obstacles (Google, Open Source, etc). It could be argued that some of those obstacles were made bigger because of the way Microsoft have done things, but I think that it’s an inevitable part of running such a large company. You can’t keep everyone happy.

Whether Bill could run a country may be a different matter, but I think he’d do a good job. Better than some politicians anyway!

If Bill Gates were president — technology shortages in schools would not be an issue. I believe every school in the country would have up to date computer systems in order to better help students learn and accomplish tasks.

He is intelligent and successful so I would like to say that he would be an efficient leader, but I couldn’t be certain. Running a company is not exactly the same as leading a nation.
