What Do You Do To Keep Yourself Motivated?

  • Well, January has come and gone, and for some people that means so have their New Year’s resolutions. But maybe you fall into the category of people who have kept them. Perhaps you’ve received a glimmer of hope that says, “Hey, maybe I CAN do this” whatever “this” is.

I don’t recall that there’s ever been a month where I haven’t posted to MeAndMyDrum, but this past January will win the prize on that. It’s not that I decided not to post. Instead, it’s that I’ve been consumed with my other goals. I was tired of saying, “If only I…” or “Just one more article and I’ll have the knowledge I need to…” So, as much as it pained me to withdraw from MAMD temporarily, I felt it was the right thing to do so I could have something to reflect on and motivate me to achieve the other goals that I have as well as share what I’ve learned with you.

Now, I’ve only scratched the surface, but at least this year I actually wrote down some goals. I even made a quick and dirty mindmap of them. They’re probably no different than some of your’s like building a stronger income from my online activities. And on the personal side, there’s the ever common “lose weight declaration”.

As for the new online goals I’ve set, it’s too soon to tell if what I have done so far will be successful. They’ll need some time to incubate. But at least I started them. And you know what? Even if they fail, I will have at least learned from them to make a better go of it the next time. It’s easy to fall into a pit of despair when we fail, and it often leaves us feeling paralyzed thinking we can’t do something and damages our motivation to continue. If you feel that way, then it’s time to change that. There’s too much talent in you to have it waste away on believing your doubts.

Attitude is very important. That’s a no-brainer and it’s always been something I have known, but this is the first time I’ve actually DONE something about it. Okay, so what if I failed at something I tried last week, last month, or even years ago? Am I going to let my history define my future? Up until this year, I have, but not any more!

    … check the mail. ;)

    {joking}

But really the money part motivates me and keeps me on track. I’d be lying if I answered anything else.

Extroversion. The only times I find myself having a hard time remaining glued to my computer and the tasks at hand ( ) are the times when I have spent too much time glued to my computer for too long.

And yes, I’m also losing weight! The switch to full-time laptop sitting caught me off guard but I’ve changed my operating basis and I have all sorts of exercise equipment I can use while I wait for things to load or download

In any case, extroversion. When you have been staring at a screen for too long you have to go outside and take a walk, look at the sea, do some physical work, exercise, garden, or anything like that. Not watch TV.

In December I went to the gym almost every day for a week. I was there from morning till dinner time, running, swimming, lifting weights, biking, the whole 9 yards. I really needed it. No matter how busy I was or how much I had to do online, I just couldn’t face it. I extroverted for a while and finally one day I became glued to my computer again.

    • @Anna
The time spent in front of my laptop has definitely contributed to my ever-expanding backside! LOL Like you said though, there are times when we must force ourselves to break away from that which is consuming our time and energy the most if for no other reason than to experience different things. It definitely helps break up the monotony. Good to hear from you! ;)

      • Oh and another thing about the gym: I, too, went to the gym regularly last month for about 2-3 weeks, and felt really good about it. It’s time that I get back into that!

Hey Mark: Matt here from eJabs.com. Good article…I also posted a similar article about my 2009 goals (read about it here). I’m going to write a post once a week giving updates on the progress of those goals. I’m using this as an accountability tool to keep on truckin’.

One of the other cool things I’ve done since 2008 is to start another blog. It’s called DebtFreeAdventure. I created the blog to help me achieve one of my goals…GET OUT OF DEBT! I don’t have a ton of debt, but any is too much for me. Check it out & let me know what you think.

Good luck with your goals…& maybe you too will want to think about updating your readers on the status of your goals!

Hey man! Good to see you here and congrats on your new blog! Very nice. My wife and I have been chipping away at our debt for a while now. Challenging, to say the least. That’s one of the motivators for me to succeed online. It will happen!

Like Garry says, money is a great motivator as is concentrating on what you’re good at and outsourcing what you’re not good at / de-motivates you.

Thanks Mark…it’s good to be back blogging again. Like you were saying about taking time off. Well, to a greater extent…I took a year off! I pretty much didn’t post much at all on eJabs, but I’ve been back at it pretty hard core since the end of Dec 2008. It’s nice to be back, and I’m back for good now…Lord willing.

I’m still subscribed to MAMD RSS so I’ll be around. Hit up eJabs & DFA and don’t be a stranger!

It’s funny you mentioned outsourcing because I’ve just started doing that myself. What a load off my shoulders it has been, too.

Whenever I feel that my motivation and inspiration have left me or I feel bummed and forget to celebrate learning something from a failure I sit back and watch one (or more) of the videos of Nick Vujicic.

    Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yo_24_qTNac

After seeing 5 minutes of him I can get up and start working on the goals I have set out to accomplish.
