The Power Of “Thank You”
-
No matter what industry you’re in, no matter what you’re doing in that industry, communication is so important to getting things done. The message could be verbal or visual, doesn’t make any difference. Without the exchange of information, we’d be bumps on a log.Sometimes, though, that communication can be something as simple as a “thank you”, but have a major positive impact on someone. Think of all the times you’ve held the door open for a stranger and they just walked right on through without acknowledging your act of kindness. Call me old fashioned, but I sometimes say “You’re welcome” to see if that snaps them out of their world for a few seconds.
Now let’s place that in an online setting, a place where it’s so easy to ignore someone and drop our usual standard of common courtesy. Ah, but you’ve no doubt seen those autoresponders for when you leave a comment on someone’s post and getting an automated email thank you for doing so. Or opted in to someone’s mailing list and received and automated response thanking you, too.
Did you know you can do that with Twitter after someone follows you? Yep, it’s called TweetLater. It’s free and once you set it up, you can add your own personal message that will be sent to the person that just followed you. This could be a thank you, a link to your blog, and maybe — if appropriate — you could link them to your product or service. This last part is something you have to be very careful with as it may turn off some people on the spot.
And that’s not all TweetLater does. You can automatically follow people who follow you, schedule tweets for future delivery, and create keyword alerts. Are you interested in what a certain “sammich man” has to say? If you narrow it down to a keyword, you can be notified when that word is used in one of his tweets.
For those of you who have followed me on Twitter (thank you!). I hope you have see the autoresponder in action. Sure, it’s automated, but it’s still a nice way of letting people know you’ve taken the time to let people know they exist and have done something you appreciate.

Hey hon.
I’ve never heard of the TweetLater function, but that’s kind of cool. I guess I’m old fashioned myself, as I always try to say thank you for things like having a door opened for me, or when a friend sends me a website they think I’ll enjoy. I think it’s important to tell that person how much you appreciate them thinking about you.
(Thanks Markie)

Yeah man, I see those, I go back and forth. If it’s just a general thank you…I guess it’s cool. Maybe even a “hey thanks, checkout my blog” but when it’s like “hey, thanks…checkout my latest product” well…I think that pushes it just a tad
Two of my friends talking about this in the last 10 minutes…hmmm…maybe the sammich man should check it out? I do have an account there, but I’m not using it.

I knew something like this existed, because I get automated tweet responses from quite a few of the people I follow. I will have to check it out, it seems like a good tool.

I don’t know mate. I think the reason people follow you on twitter is to get personal with you or at least try to be. Dropping a personalized response is easy if you don’t get 500 new subscribers every day and I think that will make people feel a lot better. But you know, that’s just me…
It’s still a nice tool though!

I think “TweetLater” is a great tool. I’m old school as well and I like courtesy, or at least being acknowledged from the other person. I think this is a great way for bloggers to reach out to their readers.

I got this in your newsletter, but had to come and say thanks!

Such a basic idea that can be so easily forgotten! Thank YOU for the reminder. I currently don’t use TweetLater, but I’m going to consider it now. Do you have an opinion on using TweetLater v. posting a “thanks for following” @ reply?

@MLDina
Would I be correct in saying you’re referring to a manual reply on Twitter? I guess it’s really up to the amount of time someone has to do that sort of thing. I think it’s great if someone can do that on a 1:1 ratio, but with sometimes it’s just not something we can do.
@Ben
Oh I agree with you! It’s about the content you provide, but I liken TweetLater to voicemail. We can’t always answer every phone call, so we have an automated message thanking the caller in advance and sometimes provide them with instructions on what to do next. Nothing beats a hand-written letter or thank you note, but when it comes to a quick electronic response, you gotta admit that it’s quite a timesaver.
@Dennis
Hehe, you’re welcome buddy!

Yes, we don’t need to be bombarded by sales message 24/7. I even complain about that when I’m at the movie theater. I came there to be entertained and get away from it all. But what I do get 30 minutes of while I wait on the movie to start? Ads.

Yes, I was
The amount of followers we get tends to vary, so I can see how manually replying might not work. Thanks for the tips!
