I just finished reading Domaining Manifesto: Domain Name Secrets Exposed by John Motson, and I gotta tell you: I’m armed for bear!John runs the blog DNXpert which is a regular read of mine. It focuses on domains and the industry. What he writes on his blog is useful already, but I think he really out did himself on his book. It’s full of great tips and resources enabling you to procure the domain(s) of your dreams while protecting yourself from scam artists.
Being a domainer, someone who specializes in the business of buying and selling domains, can be tough. But it can also be very rewarding if you have the stamina to learn from your mistakes and keep at it.Rewind back to when domain names were still an untapped resource. If a lot of us knew then what we know now about how valuable domain names can be, I’m sure we would have done things a lot differently by getting into the biz a lot sooner. It’s not too late though, and John shows you how to get into the game and earn money.

Sounds like a great book to get into domaining. I would like to look into this sometime what with Kyle writing some excellent primer posts right now on this topic.

Well said on domaining. The people that did their research and were proactive are billionaire/millionaires now, but many of us that are late to the game are also making a LOT of money doing this.
I wouldn’t say I’m new at this, but I have only recently “upped the ante” a little on my hobby instead of just casually investing. I’m now up to about 100 “properties” (domains) and about 80 of those are investments in my families future.
In the last month, I’ve sold 7 domains that I paid roughly $50.00 ($7.00 each) for and got about $425.00 from them, so that financed my other domains. I have a year to sell my remaining domains or I can renew them. I’ve been monitoring traffic to see what ones to keep, etc.
Anyway, I digress. I’ve been meaning to read this book to see what other things I could pick up and tune my skills a little. I have to say that domaining for me has been more profitable and one tenth of the work that I put into blogging, so I think I will be doing this for quite awhile.
I’m currently saving for my last name, which will cost me about $10k (or more by the time I get enough). Hopefully with enough flipping I can put together that much.

Would I spend 10,000.00 on a domain? Certainly, though I don’t have that kind of money right now. I’ve been putting 100% of my profits into additional domains right now and hopefully it will pay off in a few years.
The domain is Eslick.com, so you can see the personal value it would have to me. It would be the equivalent of you going after Sierra.com , though that would cost a lot more due to the fact that it is more common I’m sure.
I think it would make for a great homepage, and image the possibilties of a subdomain? kyle.eslick.com and xxxx.eslick.com, etc. I could setup family members on subdomains for $5.00 a month or something to try to recoup some of that investment and they could get a cheap/free maintenanced blog.
Anyway, its all theory right now, but if I had the money I would definitely pay $10,000.00 for it!

I jumped in and purchased a bunch of domains and am left with the consequences of not properly researching!
I need to wise up and get into this a bit more. I will soon be trying to make my sole living by freelancing and using the net so domaining may be a good path to look down.

Great post. Thanks for the review. I am planning to buy the book. Although I have been reading about buying and selling domains, I have never jumped in. Maybe this book is just what I need to get off my butt!

Domains are definitely something I want to get into more as another type of income stream….though, I know absolutely nothing at this point! But, this looks like a great book to learn, as well as his blog, which I will start reading.

John’s definitely one of the guys you should get to know. You should get on his list for expired domains as you might be able to snag a few from time to time.

I wouldn’t look at it like that. Naturally, if you’re going to registrar a domain, you’re going to have to spend money. Same thing with selling them as there may be a fee associated with that transaction. But there are references in the book to free software and services that can help you gather information and help you make a well-informed decision.
