People Really Do Win Online

Another blog I run is Darn Good Reviews. It’s where I do all types of reviews about blogs, products, and services all of which cover numerous types of industries. Frequently, I make posts about contests that are running on other blogs. It’s a good way to not only enter them (because writing a post about them is usually a requirement for entering), but it also helps to break things up a bit.

I’ve won advertising on some of those contests, but today I was informed that I won a 4GB iPod Nano!

So in case you like to enter contests for the chance of winning cash, products, gifts cards, or whatever they have to offer, please consider subscribing to Darn Good Reviews to find out what’s going on in the contest world. And if you have a contest or would like to be reviewed, just make a request and I’ll see about hooking you up.

I haven’t decided if I’m going to keep the iPod Nano, sell it on ebay, or use it as a prize here on MeAndMyDrum. What should I do?

  1. I often wonder quite how many people actually enter these contests and so what the odds of actually winning are - perhaps it’s better than I originally thought!

I’m gonna try my luck on more contests - particularly when there are prizes like iPods!

Do you have much experience of running contests yourself?

Zaths last blog post..Football Manager 2008 - Cheap on Xbox 360

  2. @Zath
I’ve run two contests here, so I have a little experience. The trend I’m seeing from other contests is allowing contestants to earn more chances of winning by performing certain tasks. These tasks include:

    • commenting on the contest post
    • writing a post on your own blog and link back to the contest post
    • Stumbling or Digging the contest post (or other social network)
    • and of course subscribing to that blog’s feed

But the “cost” associated with all that for the blogger who is running a contest is to keep up with all that information. Asking contestants to leave a comment on the contest post when a certain task has been completed helps I think.

Winners are usually selected using random.org — at least that’s how I’ve seen most contest blogs inform readers how they will select the winner and for good reason because it’s easy to use.

    Hope that helps! :)

  3. I’m thinking up a couple contests myself (smallish ones) but I’ll let ya know anyway :)

You’re right about winning…I was so shocked when i one 2 ad spots, I didn’t even have my ads ready yet! Luckily they were both kind enough to give me time to have graphics made.

  4. I just attempted to subscribe to DGR via email…it informed me that the email subscribe feature was not enabled.

    Please fix?

  5. @Dennis
OMG!! I’m embarrassed so think how long that has been broken. I’ve fixed it now. Thanks so much for bringing it to my attention. No telling how long that would have gone unnoticed. :)
    And congrats on your winnings!

  6. LOL No problem, I get that reaction a lot.

Thing is I hate readers, as I NEVER remember to check ‘em, so that does neither of us any good. For better or worse thought, I have an email addiction

    I’m all subscribed now.

  7. Congrats man, i am yet to win a contest  . When will my time come

Hang in there! What I didn’t say is how many other contests I’ve entered and haven’t won anything. So keep going after them!

  9. Congrats on the win! I’ve seen a lot of average prizes where the winner in turn gives it away in a contest, but the Nano is a great and very useful prize.

Do you already have one? Would you use it? If you have a use for it, definitely keep it.

  10. Alright Mark! I won a set of headphones from Andy Bailey and all I had to do was leave a comment…haha! I would rather win a new iPod though

Thanks, buddy! I have an MP3 player, but nothing like the iPod and only 2GB of storage. Only thing is (unless I’m mistaken), I don’t think I can transfer the songs I’ve purchased to it since it’s a new platform. Hmm, I still have to consider this.

    @Bobby
Hey there! Were they the kind that you cup your ears with or ear buds? Sometimes I long for the kind that cup my ears entirely to lose myself in the music.

  12. Keep it! Well, I’m biased, because my iPod is broken and I miss it.

  13. @Liz
It’s awfully tempting. Sorry to hear your iPod broke. :(

  14. Congratulations! And I’m heading over to your other blog next :)

  15. @Mike L.
Thanks for that! I appreciate you, too, going over to my other blog. Welcome to MeAndMyDrum.

  16. What I won was earphone style, but they are nice. I have a great pair of Akai headphones for total musical submersion. My new ones are great for while driving and stuff while I need to hear outside sounds.

  17. I will give this a try also. I dont know if its really worthwhile since we dont really know what will be the percentage for us to be lucky winners. lol. better give this a try. do the winners get their prizes at the end?

  18. Congratulations buddy! iPod Nano’s are nice especially the newer ones. If you do run a contest, with a prize like this you will definitely get a lot of exposure. Either way enjoy it! Have a great weekend. :-)

  20. Mark Cuban won a good portion of his fortune online, before that he was just a regular guy. You never know what might happen.

  21. People do really win, the key is some are luckier than others. So far all I have ever got was some coupons for Bocca burgers. I will get an iPod one day though!

  22. @tv bracket
Yes, keep plugging away at it and I’m sure you’ll land something really cool. I’ve entered lots of contests and this is the first real product I’ve won, not to mention it’s value.
