Drummin’ Up Some Link Love #17

  • [Drum roll please]

Here’s the latest edition of my Drum Corps series:

    • Kyle explains the benefits of using Google Reader Notifier. If you’re a Windows user, then you can download this nifty little app to alert you when your faves post something new.
    • Brown Baron brings us an awesome mouse that every gamer should have. It’s called the Microsoft Sidewinder Gaming Mouse. But I think they should rename it The Mighty Mouse.
    • Garry admits it’s not all about Google, though that does have a very high importance. He offers us a list of blog portals and directories that you should check out.
    • Tay wants you to shake things up a bit. By creating some controversy and voicing your own opinion you’re more likely to create a little excitement on your blog. Playing it safe is always a good rule to go by, just don’t let it paralyze your blog.
    • And finally, Bush shows coComments’ response to their shaky service of late. I posted a review of their service and compared it to co.mments recently. Not that I’m claiming credit for it, but a few days afterward, coComments came out with an apology, which I think is a good thing because it shows they care about their audience.

You SHOULD claim credit! If anyone asks me about it, I’m pointing’em your way. *nod*

        You are welcome…

Got a two second tip for you…

        Your robots.txt file,

        add this to it:

        sitemap: http://www.meandmydrum.com/sitemap.xml

which basically tells search bots to search for your content via your sitemap.xml file… which I see is here:

        http://www.meandmydrum.com/sitemap.xml

sorry for off topic… I just noticed it and wanted to help.

A lot of debate about what all should be in a robots.txt file… I’ll not go into that here… but one thing is for sure… hook that bot baby up with your road map! show it where to go! and get you some robot lovin!!! LOL!!!

        • Hey, thanks again! I’ve been meaning to give my blog a little overhaul. I’m going to add this to the list. ;)

Don’t do too much… the design is tight! Your blog looks great… lets just see if we can get the Googlebot to give you a big wet kiss! LOL!!

Robots.txt is pretty important. Pointing to your sitemap.xml is very important… after that point, you’ll have many SEO’s offer their opinions about what to do…

And in my experience… how you write the robots.txt file is situational.

I have had huge success with blocking all access minus my home page and individual post pages…

But there are sites too that I allow access to the cats… which I attempt to train the bots to recognize these sections as an equal importance to that of my home page…

But all in all… I like to DISALLOW all access minus my home page and post pages… that works amazingly well.

I don’t have to worry about Google indexing my content and archiving a copy of my cats section, thinking its the post page.

When people search Google for something, and they stumble upon a listing of mine… it links direct to my post.

            Example: http://www.google.com/search?q=blog+authors+organizations

You will see my home page and individual post page. Also there is another listing that might catch your eye… and that is Matt Huggins. I thought that was cool to see him there too. He’s pretty good at SEO as well. And a super nice guy!

Talk to you soon… and I will stop robbing your comment space… LOL!!!
