Boost Your Gmail Experience With Google Labs
-
It’s well hidden, but worth the effort to find. For all you Gmail users out there you might want to take a gander at the settings interface and clicking on the “Labs” tab. Doing so will bring up a laundry list of some very cool features that can enhance your Gmail experience. To be clear, these are browser independent, so everyone gets the benefit.
Here are a few that I’m currently using.
Superstars
Up til now we’ve only had the yellow stars to add to messages. Well, this feature gives you a few more choices: blue star, red star, red bang, and green check mark. Now you can put a little more meaning behind these icons and make your inbox a little more productive.
Mouse Gestures
I don’t know if this conflicts with other mouse gesture plugins for Firefox (it may just depend on how you have them configured), but this is a very cool feature enabling you to move forward and backward when reading messages. Just right-click and hold and then drag left or right to go to previous or next, respectively. Drag up and you’re taken to the inbox. Very fast and easy to use.
Mark as Read Button
Tired of fumbling for the “mark as read” item in the dropdown menu? Yeah, me too. This nifty features gives you an easy-to-access button along with the others at the top so you can quickly mark your messages as read.There are a total of 25 enhancements. Others that I haven’t tried, but show promise are: forgotten attachment detector, quote selected text, hide unread counts, and signature tweaks.
Check them out and let me know what you think.

Wow, very interesting. The mouse gesture is so nice, I will enable this right away! I hate to click on “Back to inbox” everytime.
Mark as read button is a must also, as it’s really a pain to get it through the dropdown…

Being restricted to only yellow stars in the past was kind of a pain. It is nice to have more choices now to sort the important stuff.

LOL @ dennis I feel that one. I have a few gmail accounts its pain in the ar$e isnt it, I dont know if there is a way, Ive tried other browsers at the same time and it seems when logged into google you’re logged into google. I could wrong though.

@Dennis
I don’t understand what you mean about not being able to find them all, but if you mean the issue is more to do with logging in and out of them, you might want to give Cookie Pie a try. It’s a Firefox addon that enables you to login to several accounts using as many tabs. I was using it for a while, but after updating Firefox, I came to suspect it might be having trouble. But it’s worth a shot for you.
For it to work, you right-click the tab and toggle cookie pie on. You then login to your Gmail or whatever service you wish to log into. You then open another tab, toggle cookie pie on, and login with another account. Hope this helps!
@Shane!!!
How ya doing! Don’t worry about wasting time with these, once you’ve set them up, you’ll definitely save time.
@recycling bin
Exactly! This will definitely come in handy.
@Bush
Doth my eyes deceive me? Is that really you? LOL Good to see you man. Hope you’re doing well!
@Bruno
You’re quite welcome.
@Ben
Glad to have found something of use for you. Yeah, that mouse gesture is really neat.

Will always love Gmail.
You know, my first email is yahoo, and daily I’ve got tons of spam. Now, I feel free with Gmail.
I use thunderbird to check email, but things you write here are interesting to me.

I tried to use the stars system, but it seemed to complicate things for me more than anything, but I like the sound of the mark as read button, just what I could do with!
