A Tag For My 5 Goals

by Mark Sierra on May 12, 2007

My friend Jennifer of The Life of a School Bus Driver has tagged me with the following question: What are my 5 goals? Be they realistic, silly, personal, or professional — doesn’t matter. So here goes!

  1. Get in shape. And I mean something other than round! Life is too short and busy to go around being uncomfortable. I backed up the other day to let someone go in front of me, and I could actually hear a beeping sound (like the trucks do). So if I lose at least 20 percent of my current weight by the end of the year, I’d consider that a good start.
  2. Read more offline. One of my New Year’s resolutions this year was to read five books before my birthday in August. I love surfing the Web, blogging, and bringing informative and thought-provoking material to my readers. But have I picked up a book? Well, yes actually…if you count moving it from “here” to “there”.
  3. Increase my RSS subscriptions, Technorati authority rank, and pagerank. Though I have yet to see a doctor about it, I think my heart rate rises and falls in response to my subscription number. So if it gets any lower, promise me you’ll call a doctor, okay?
  4. Be more productive. Okay, everybody says that, I know, but I really need to be.
  5. Be more at peace with myself. Celebrate my achievements, minimize the effects of failure, and carry on.

I have to go to my corner and meditate on this.

I can sympathize with number 1

Dude, your authority number really increased since the last time I’ve been here. Where you snagging all these link backs? Care to share? :P

Hehe…you noticed that too! I don’t know for sure, but it might be that I had all the backlinks from the Problogger’s writing contest. There were quite a few and maybe it finally turned up the heat. Woo-hoo!

Darnit, I wish I had known about that thing sooner. I would have written something for it ;P Ahh well, maybe once Lars gets the one going over on Bloggst :)

We both seem to struggle with the feed subscriptions though. Yesterday I was at like 45. Today 32. Doh!

About the subscriptions, from what I gather, the sources used to calculate that number can sometimes fall from the calculation. Perhaps a services goes down for some reason. But when they go back online, so, too, the number increases (assuming all things being equal).

After I wrote my article on the “5 Sympathies for the Devil” I noticed such a drop and thought to myself, “Crap, people are dropping because they think it has something to do with satanic worship!” But a couple of days after the number started to rise. Not as high as it was before (dropped by 3), but it was better than I once thought.

I also wonder if it has anything to do with how many people who are subscribed actually read the feed each day? I use firefox live bookmarks for my feeds, so it pulls new content from sites whenever I have firefox running, but how does it work for feed readers? If someone doesn’t open their feed reader for a day to view your latest content, perhaps they’re not counted?

Just guessing. I haven’t the foggiest idea :)

Mark,

Ohmygosh! Carol! Good to hear from you. I saw a recent post on one of your money making blogs and thought maybe you were back online. I hope things are well with you. Drop me a line when you have the time.

And thanks for the compliments. I’m just blogging on!
