Control Your Email Inbox With Endjunk

March 27, 2007

I hate spam, and I really don’t like the people who are responsible for sending it. Surely they can find something else better to do than to waste other people’s time.

Alas, there is a way to fight back! By using disposable email addresses — a decoy, if you will — you can thwart a spammer’s attempt at getting to your inbox.

A service I’ve been using a lot lately is called Endjunk. Basic membership is free (they’re working on other paid plans with varying feature offerings). You create an account and give them an email address.

Let’s say that address is the one you want to protect. You use your username as your unique ID for the email addresses you want to create in the future.

For example, say your ID is “34molan”. Now let’s say you’re registering for something online at “nickelsanddimes.com”. They need an email address so you give them “nickelsanddimes@34molan.endjunk.com”. Whenever an email is sent to that address, Endjunk will forward that address to your real email address.

If you get spammed with “nickelsanddimes@34molan.endjunk.com” you can just disable it on your account. Voila! You’ve stopped that spammer dead in his tracks.

There are several other disposable email services. Which ones have you heard of or use?
