2 Tips For Eliminating Blogger’s Block
-
You’re browsing sites, left and right. You come across something that interests you and you say to yourself, “Self, this is something worth blogging about on your blog.” But you forget to make a note of why you want to write about it. What will you do? What will you do?
Something I use to help me out is Google Notebook. This fits snugly in the lower corner of my Firefox browser. When I find something I want to write about later, I pop open it’s little window and “clip” the page I’m viewing where it sleeps until I return. (It’s also how I store my Drum Corps candidates.
) I can even save content from the page and store it in my notebook. While in my account, I can easily move notebooks around and even add comments to those to ensure I won’t forget a thing.
Another tool that helps me is Diigo (pronounced “dee-go”). It’s a social bookmarking site with abilities far beyond those of mortal bookmarkers (okay, maybe others have the same powers, but work with me here). While viewing a web page — any web page — I can highlight content and also have it stored in my account. But I can also leave notes on that page. These notes can be for my eyes only, or I can make it to where anyone with Diigo who chooses to view anyone’s notes can view them.
The purpose of these notes is for me to “mark” parts of a page like I would printed paper. Diigo says you can make notes on web pages for anyone who doesn’t have the toolbar installed. So, conceivably, you could point your visitors to other places and markup the content for further reading. Perhaps you’re commenting on an article that would make more sense to viewers if you could actually show them where on the page you’re talking about. I haven’t tried that yet, but sounds promising.
Adding a special tag to my discoveries (e.g., “articles”, “posts”, “to-write-about”…whatever) can make it easy for me to find them again, thus de-cluttering my browser’s bookmarks.
So no more excuses about not knowing what to write about.

There’s a also a slick little post-it style plugin that sits in your WP dashboard where you can keep little notes. That’s what I’ve been using lately. It heps me keep track of all these memes I keep getting tagged with
It’s called Dash Notes. You can grab it here:

Nice find! Diigo would be excellent for group projects for students.
I’m referring this one to my wife, I think she’d like it a lot (teacher)!

@Mike: Cool! I’ll have to give that a try. Plus a few other plugins he has there look promising. The thing about Google Notebook is that even though it’s easy to use, it’s also easy to overwhelm yourself if you don’t unclutter it on a regular basis.
@Rob: That is a neat idea. I’ve suggested this to one of my kids for when she does homework. It’s a useful way to store and organize your notes for homework assignments.

What I love about the Dash Notes thing is that it’s right there on the front page of the dashboard when you log into WP and since I use it to remind me of things I need to post about, that’s the perfect place for it to be
I haven’t tried his other plugins yet but I’ve got them bookmarked in my “plugins to install” folder

I like the timing of this post since I’ll be putting up my speed links within a few hours. I’m collecting the entries right now.

Thanks for sharing Diigo with your readers. Glad that it’s serving you well.
@Baron: Other than a toolbar plugin, we also offer a lightweight “Diigolet” (a browser button) that provides an alternative and easy solution to do all the basic “Diigo” functions, ie. highlight, annotate, bookmark and forward without a download. Give that a try!

@Maggie: I remember you from the Diigo forum. Thanks for dropping by. Please make plans to return. Always glad to hear from people!

These are great pieces of advice. Thanks Mark.
I have another one to add.
When you’re not at your computer (*wink*), carry a small notebook in your pocket, or perhaps just take notes on your PDA. Whenever a blog topic pops into your head, jot it down & you’ll have tons of ideas for a rainy day!

I use Google Notebook, but haven’t used it to save snips to blog about later. Good idea. And I’ll definitely check out diigo.
Thanks!
